Paintings on galvanised steel sheet.
Galvanised steel, 100 cm x 30 cm
These paintings are all on galvanised steel sheet. The pigments were created on the zinc surface of the galvanised steel using solutions of heavy metal salts, such as copper sulphate and lead nitrate. Additional pigments, like the malachite green below, were made in situ by reacting copper sulphate and sodium bicarbonate solutions. The solutions were splashed and sprayed onto the steel surface using teat pipettes, a washing up brush, and even a window-wash bottles. After rinsing and drying, the pigments were consolidated (bound) using acrylic fixative.
