Unfettered at the Burning Bush Barn
Rockland St. Mary, Norfolk
‘What bird are you?
This was the question posed by the organisers of 'Unfettered'. My choice was the Arctic Tern. It pairs for a long life, and they are known for their flights from pole to pole. It is a feisty survivor. One launched three successive attacks on me on a long beach as I approached to within 100 m of its nesting site. On the third run it flew at me knee height, soared at the last moment, and scuffed my hair with its feet. Respect! I backed off in avian awe.
The adult mail can weigh up to 120 g. My chosen metal was aluminium, my form cut and bent from 1mm sheet, full size. It weighed 111 g. Arctic Terns have to be lucky too!
My sheet aluminium Arctic Tern did have a mate. It was cut from aluminium gauze. They fly together still, in a private dwelling in South Norfolk.
This work has made me think about birds, form and movement. Watch this website!
